This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis processes and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

This course enables students to acquire knowledge and skills in utilizing 35mm SLR cameras and black and white darkroom processes for picture making. Students will study the origins and evolution of photography, as well as familiarize themselves with the required vocabulary to communicate effectively in this medium. Colour will be explored in the basic introduction to digital photography. Students who complete this course will develop an aesthetic sensitivity and improve their expressive, visual and technical skills through practical applications of the photographic medium.

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studio work that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, as well as the creation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emerging technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process when evaluating their own work and the work of others. The course may be delivered as a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., photography, video, computer graphics, information design).

This course provides an introduction to students interested in Fashion Design. Studio projects include drawn fashion design and illustration, colour schemes for wardrobes, fashion photography, advertising layouts, fabric design and painting, and the illustration of historical and current fashions. This course begins portfolio preparation for those pursuing a fashion design career at a post-secondary level.

This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter, and will evaluate art works using specific criteria. This course will focus on the fundamentals of black and white photography.

This course provides each student with an introduction to the basic concepts of digital imaging as applied to photography. With hands-on experience using applicable technology, modern developments will be presented which have led to the present applications of digital imaging which combine traditional photographic ideas with electronic media. The student will have the opportunity to learn how to operate image manipulation software using a variety of scanning equipment, software tools and output devices by executing new assignments and applying these technologies to their photographic process.

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.

This is the ultimate class in self expression and studio technique advancement, the culmination of several years of student inspiration and artistic experimentation from previous art courses. Students will develop and execute an independent, sophisticated art thesis through 5 large scale artworks (medium and media dependent on prerequisite and in consultation with the teacher). Advanced techniques consistent with portfolio entry requirements in chosen medium/media will be taught and refined. Portfolio support will be provided for those applying to post-secondary programs.

This course will focus on the refinement of skills and knowledge in photography. Students will analyse different photographic art forms and increase their understanding of changes in Western and Canadian Art and art form from around the world. Students will produce a portfolio that highlights their skill in photography as a visual art form. Emphasis will be on the demonstration of a personal style and approach to photography. Emphasis will also be placed on the different forms of photography; traditional and digital through thematic work to reflect a mastery of technique and skill.
Prerequisites: AWQ3M
This course builds on skill acquired in AWI3M1. Students will continue to develop their own fashion drawing style through newly acquired technical skills in fashion illustration. Individual portfolio work and studio projects dominate this course to help students prepare a fashion design portfolio for post secondary fashion design programmes. Students have the option to purchase enhanced art kit materials if desired.
