Appointments

Counsellors are available for student appointments in person. Google Meet appointments may be booked for family Guidance appointments (book via Parent Portal).  Please email the counsellor if you need a link.

Student appointments with a counsellor can be made through TeachAssist​Students are free to select any counsellor based on alpha (last name), available period, or personal preference.

Guidance Supports for Families and Students 

Family Night Webinars (FNW) are conducted via Microsoft Teams to allow families to utilize Closed Captioning in a preferred language.  Please see Video instructions to enable Closed Captioning in a Preferred Language.  Links to presentations are shared with families via Friday e-Bulletins, as well as grade-specific emails.  Presentations are shared with families via email the next day, for those unable to attend.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS 2026-2027 - MARKVILLE SECONDARY SCHOOL


PLEASE NOTE:  Markville Secondary School (MSS) is open to in-boundary students in Grades 9-12, yet closed to Transfers.  This means students must live within our boundaries in order to register, without exception.  To check if you are within our boundaries, please use the YRDSB School Locator Tool:  http://www.yrdsb.ca/schools/pages/school-locator.aspx

The parent/legal guardian must be living at the same address with the child.

If you reside in our boundaries and would like to proceed with the registration of your child, please see the scenarios below to determine your registration process. 

Scenarios

YRDSB FEEDER SCHOOL FAMILIES (James Robinson, Ramer Wood, Unionville Meadows, Unionville Public, Central Park)Elementary schools will confirm addresses.  No action is required by the family to MSS.  Gr 8 teachers and MSS Guidance will support the process. 
YRDSB ELEMENTARY NON-FEEDERPlease speak to your elementary school office to notify them of the interest to attend MSS.  The office will confirm if you have an in-boundary address and re-route the student in the system to be able to select MSS courses. 
YRDSB HIGH SCHOOLPlease book an appointment with MSS Guidance (Registration Process instructions below) to show proof of residency and provide course selection requests.
NON-YRDSB HIGH SCHOOL or ELEMENTARY

Non-Canadian residents, even if currently in a non-YRDSB school in Ontario, please see the Scenario below to connect with the YRDSB Reception Centre.  

For Canadian residents, please to book an appointment with MSS Guidance (Registration Process instructions below) to show proof of residency and provide course selection requests. 

FAMILIES REGISTERING FROM OUTSIDE THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO
  • Canadian residents will follow the instructions for Non-YRDSB students.
  • Non-Canadian residents must contact the YRDSB RECEPTION CENTRE FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND DIRECTION.  YOU DO NOT APPLY DIRECTLY TO MARKVILLE SS UNTIL THIS IS DONE.  THE RECEPTION CENTRE will collect your documentation and schedule an academic assessment of English and Mathematics.

REGISTRATION PROCESS:

You first must fill out a printable YRDSB Registration Form for Secondary School: https://www2.yrdsb.ca/sites/default/files/2024-11/FOR-schooladmission-163-02.pdf 

This form can be scanned and attached to an email to the Markville Secondary School main email address:  markville.ss@yrdsb.ca 

         The SUBJECT of your email should read:  

           REGISTRATION REQUEST FOR 2026-2027 (Child’s name)

         Indicate in the email:  

  •  Parent/Guardian Name
  • Contact Phone Number
  • Name and Grade (2026-27) of the Student
    • Attach Registration Form (print clearly and completely so it can easily be read by school staff)

If your address is within our boundary, you will be notified by email to proceed with collecting the required documentation, and an in-person Registration Appointment will be assigned to you.  If you do not reside in our boundary, you will be notified as to which school is your home school.  


IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT:

At your Registration Appointment you will be required to show all ORIGINAL  documentation prior to registering at our school

  1. Bring your completed paper copy of your Registration Form and Proof of your child’s status in Canada (Birth Certificate or Canadian Passport or proof of Landed Immigrant Status or Refugee Status)

     

  2. Course Selection Sheet  - please choose the appropriate Grade and see MSS Course Information to support selection
  1. Proof of Child’s Address
  • One (1) from Category A, and Two (2) from Category B  (SEE EXAMPLES BELOW)
  • All documents must show home address for student living with the parent(s)/guardians(s)
  • All documents must contain at least one parent or guardian’s name
  • All Category A documents must be original.  Copies will not be accepted

4.  Academic Records

  • Copy of Most Recent Report Cards from Grade 8 or Most Recent High School Credit Counselling Summary (CCS)/ Transcript
  • Copy of Special Education Paperwork - Psychological Report or IEP (if applicable)
  • Attendance Information (if available)

5.  Other

  • Custody papers, if applicable 

Category A:  

(Requires 1 original document)

  • Property tax Bill/MPAC notice of tax assessment (must be current - within past year)
  • Purchase and sale agreement, including proof of purchase and closing date, provided before the student attends the school (must be current - within past year)
  • Bank Statement/Financial letter: must be stamped by Financial Institution – financial details can be obscured (must be current – within two months)
  • Any CRA document (must be current – within past year)
    • For example: Notice of Assessment, Canada Child Benefit, Goods and Services tax/Harmonized sales tax (GST/HST credit), Housing Benefits, etc.

Category B:   

(Requires 2 documents)

  • Utility Bill/e-Bill (must be current – within two months)
    • For example: hydro, gas, water, residential phone/cable/internet Bill, insurance policy – home, tenant or auto
  • Any CRA document, IF NOT USED FOR CATEGORY A. (must be current – within past year)
    • For example: Notice of Assessment, Canada Child Benefit, Goods and Services tax/Harmonized sales tax (GST/HST credit), Housing Benefits, etc.

Other official Provincial or Federal government documents that include parent(s) or guardian(s) names and address (must be current – within past year).

Documents NOT acceptable in Category A or B

  • Health Card;
  • Driver’s License;
  • Lease or Rental Agreements
  • Credit Card Statement; or
  • Cell Phone Bill/e-Bill

What we do

Guidance and Career Education offers to students, teachers, families, and the community a variety of services and programs.  The Guidance department at Markville provides support regarding the academic and personal needs of each individual student. Academic counselling may include assistance with course selection, career planning or pathway options.

Each student is unique and has individual needs that are important to them. At Markville, counsellors of​fer individual appointments to facilitate each student’s needs. We believe in guiding and challenging our students to become independent, healthy learners that consistently work at their full potential.

Our Guidance department serves the school community in a variety of ways:

  • Supports students in academic planning and course selection toward graduation and current ambitions.
  • Helps students to seek out special pathways programs in secondary school that support their learning styles, interests and needs.
  • Helps individual students to envision a plan for post-secondary and target some short and long term goals.
  • Provides information around all post-secondary pathways (workplace, college, apprenticeship, university) and career pathways.
  • Supports students in establishing effective study habits and exam preparation.
  • Coaches in the scholarship application process.
  • Supports students in such life skills as decision-making, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, stress and time-management and relationship awareness.
  • Provides personal counselling and referrals to community resources.
  • Provides crisis counselling and referrals to community resources.
