The Importance of Technological Education in the Curriculum 

Technological innovation affects every aspect of modern life, from daily routines to global interactions, helping to meet basic needs and improve living standards. As technology rapidly evolves, students must become technologically literate—able to understand, use, and adapt to various technologies. Technological education equips students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills needed to navigate and contribute to an increasingly complex and competitive global economy. It also fosters awareness of environmental issues and the responsible use of technology. By working hands-on with current tools and systems, students gain the knowledge and confidence to pursue careers and solve real-world technological challenges.

Goals of Technological Education

The fundamental purpose of the technological education program is to provide students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enhance their ability to achieve success in secondary school, the workplace, postsecondary education or training, and daily life. The goals of the technological education curriculum are to enable students to:

  • Gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts underlying technological education;
  • Achieve the level of technological competence they will need in order to succeed in their postsecondary education or training programs or in the workplace;
  • Develop a creative and flexible approach to problem solving that will help them address challenges in various areas throughout their lives;
  • Develop the skills, including critical thinking skills, and the knowledge of strategies required to do research, conduct inquiries, and communicate findings accurately, ethically, and effectively;
  • Develop lifelong learning habits that will help them adapt to technological advances in the changing workplace and world;
  • Make connections that will help them take advantage of potential postsecondary educational and work opportunities.

Programs Offered at Markville Secondary School

The Technological Studies Department at Markville Secondary School includes four different program areas:

Communication Technology:

Communication Technology courses focus on graphic design, audio, and video production using industry-standard tools like Photoshop, video cameras, and sound equipment. Students complete hands-on projects and gain skills relevant to careers in media, including film, TV, radio, animation, and graphic design. 

Engineering Technology

Computer Technology courses combine computer programming with hands-on electronics, including circuit building, robotics, and computer networking. Students design and build software and hardware systems, preparing for careers in programming, robotics, and electrical engineering. 

Technological Design

Technological Design courses emphasize problem-solving through projects in engineering, architecture, and various design fields like interior and mechanical design. Students apply research, materials knowledge, and design principles using both traditional and digital methods to create innovative, sustainable solutions. 

Woodworking Technology

Woodworking Technology courses teach students to construct cabinets and furniture using tools, equipment, and construction techniques. Students also explore design, drafting, building codes, and environmental considerations while preparing for careers in construction and carpentry.

Courses
