Social Sciences and The Humanities

What are the social sciences and the humanities?

Social Sciences and the Humanities is the scientific study of society and the ways in which we relate to one another.  It helps to explain how society works.   The Social Sciences and The Humanities department also includes courses in Family Studies.  These courses allow students to learn a variety of concepts which include personal growth, wellness, nutrition, cultural values, as well as the impact of political, economic and social systems on the individual and society.

Why should students take social science and the humanities courses?

Family Studies, Social Sciences and the Humanities courses help students to think critically and creatively. They teach students both interpersonal and daily practical skills. Furthermore, they teach students to reason, and to ask the right questions. These courses can help provide students with the knowledge they need to understand the world they live in.  Family Studies, Social Sciences and the Humanities provides students with the tools they need to navigate the future.

*Some of the courses offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities department lead to a Health and Wellness Specialist High School Majors (SHSM) Ministry of Ontario certificate.
