This department has been set up to assist students who have had difficulty achieving credits in the traditional classroom environment. Students are placed in a warm, caring, supportive environment to ensure their success; all programs offered on site at Markville Secondary School.
The registration process requires a personal interview with an administrator and an Alternative Education teacher to determine entrance into the program.
Markville S.S. Offers The Entrepreneurship Program (EOP) Flash Print at MSS
Students who have an interest in art, creative design, business, marketing, and entrepreneurship studies should consider Markville's EOP program called Flash Print @ MSS. Interested students should have some basic understanding with Photoshop. The entrepreneurship focus allows students to understand the business model by running an existing print and design store, to market a business idea, to learn about customer service and to build on their employability skills in the workplace. In addition, for post-secondary studies in graphic design, business, and entrepreneurship studies, this experience could enhance their portfolios and applications to specific programs. Class sizes are limited to 12 students and students must have good attendance records to be considered for this program as it operates as a business with high quality customer projects and orders to be delivered to specific timelines.
Possible courses offered in each semester are: BDI3C, IDC3O and 4O. For the 4th credit, a dual credit course or a coop credit is recommended.
Markville S.S. Offers the ALEP Program
Students who are looking to attain their credits in grade 11 and 12 through a paid workplace experience should consider this program which is offered for one semester only. Students are expected to return to their home school at the start of the next semester.
Job opportunities are found through partnerships with 360kids, YMCA programs, and skilled trades programs. As students build their employability skills, and explore the world of work, they are only required to attend school one day a week. Flexibility is built into the program to accommodate students' needs in a very supportive environment
Courses offered are ENG3C / 4C, ENG3 / 4E, GWL3O and coop credits. Students are encouraged to take a dual credit course as well to help prepare to a post-secondary education.
Markville S.S. Offers the Supervised Alternative Learning (SAL) Program
The Supervised Alternative Learning Program should be considered for students who:
14-17 years old
have the support of a social worker
are having significant difficulties with regular attendance at school
require an alternative learning experience
An individualized plan can be tailored to the student to enable them to progress towards obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or achieving their own education and life goals.
